Stainless pipe and tube cover a wide range of products. A decorative tube, a mechanical tube and a pipe specified for a particular fluid service may look similar while having different dimensional standards, manufacturing requirements and inspection obligations. Identify the intended use and governing specification at the start of the enquiry so the proposed supply can be assessed correctly.
Select the stainless grade for the service environment, temperature, fabrication process and required properties. The source range includes several stainless families, but a general list of grades does not establish suitability for a particular duty. Use the full designation and applicable product standard. Any proposed substitution should be reviewed against the actual requirements.
State whether welded or seamless construction is required. The choice should follow the product standard, design and acceptance criteria. If weld condition, heat treatment or additional examination is specified, include it explicitly. Do not assume that the absence of a visible seam proves a particular production route or inspection level.
For round products, specify outside diameter and wall thickness, or the nominal size and schedule under the named standard. For square or rectangular tube, give both outside dimensions, wall thickness and any corner or dimensional requirements. Include length, tolerance, quantity and the condition of the ends. Consistent units reduce uncertainty when comparing quotations.
End preparation may involve plain cutting, bevels or other features required by the drawing. Identify these with dimensions rather than relying on general terms. Surface finish may be important for fabrication, appearance or cleaning, but the required finish must be stated clearly. A bright outer surface does not establish the condition of the bore or the grade of the material.
Possible uses include equipment frames, fabricated assemblies, mechanical components and specified conveying systems, subject to the material and design requirements. Where pressure, hygienic or other controlled service applies, provide the relevant specification and required inspection documents. Product suitability should be established for that service rather than assumed from a generic stainless designation.
Define the product in measurable terms and attach drawings when end features or section geometry are important.
| Item | Information Required |
|---|---|
| Material | Stainless grade and product standard |
| Construction | Welded or seamless, with specified delivered condition |
| Section | Round, square or rectangular dimensions |
| Wall | Thickness or schedule under the applicable standard |
| Length | Length, tolerance, quantity and end condition |
| Surface | Outside and inside finish requirements |
| Testing | Specified dimensional, material and service-related examinations |
| Documents | Traceability and required inspection records |
Confirm which tests are included and the applicable acceptance criteria before supply. Where special examination or inspection attendance is required, arrange it as part of the order. Generic claims such as tested pipe do not define a method, extent or acceptance limit.
Receiving checks should include markings, dimensions, piece count, end condition and visible surface damage. Preserve material identity when tubes are cut into shorter pieces. Keep the records required for the intended assembly and service.
Pipe packaging should support the lengths, secure the bundle and protect specified surfaces and ends. Wrapping, separators or end protection may be requested where appropriate to the finish and route. Confirm bundle mass, piece count, labels and unloading access. Avoid arrangements that cause preventable bending, rubbing or impact damage.
Store the material on suitable supports and maintain separation from sources of contamination. Protect finished surfaces during movement into fabrication. Inspect package condition on receipt and retain the material identification until the components are incorporated into the assembly.
Not automatically. The governing standard, dimensions, construction and inspection requirements may differ. Specify the intended duty and approved product requirements.
Use the construction required by the design and product standard. Provide those requirements so the suitable supply route can be confirmed.
Send the length schedule, tolerances and end drawing. The quotation should identify the agreed processing scope.
Include grade, standard, construction, dimensions, wall thickness, length, quantity and destination. Add finish, end preparation, testing and documentation requirements.
