Dual phase automotive steel uses a ferritic matrix with harder martensitic islands to combine strength with useful formability. DP sheet and coil are considered for stamped structural components where drawing, stretching and joining requirements must be balanced. Provide the grade, thickness, coating and part application for an accurate quotation.
Dual phase automotive steel, commonly called DP steel, combines a relatively soft ferritic matrix with a harder martensitic phase. This structure provides a different balance of strength and deformation behaviour from conventional high-strength low-alloy sheet. The selected strength level and microstructure influence how the material responds during forming.
DP steel is evaluated for structural stampings, reinforcements, cross-members and other formed body components. Material selection starts with the part geometry and loading requirements. A component with broad stretching may present a different challenge from one with a sharply stretched cut edge, even when both parts use the same nominal thickness.
The material can offer useful global formability, but this should not be confused with unlimited edge stretchability. Punched holes, slit edges and trimming operations need attention when the next operation stretches the edge. Tool clearance, burrs and surface defects can influence cracking, so trial blanks should reflect the intended production cutting method.
Discuss springback, die clearance and lubrication with the forming team. The complete material designation is important because a generic DP label does not define all mechanical properties. If the production process includes a paint-bake cycle, any specified bake-hardening requirement should be assessed under the agreed conditions rather than assumed from the steel family name.
Uncoated and metallic-coated product routes must be evaluated against the component environment and downstream manufacturing process. Welding parameters should be established for the actual sheet stack, thickness and coating. Changes to grade or surface treatment should be reviewed before a production substitution is approved.
Use the complete DP grade designation and current drawing revision when requesting material. The enquiry should identify both the supplied condition and the properties needed after downstream processing.
| Material family | Dual phase advanced high-strength steel |
|---|---|
| Forming checks | Global formability, cut-edge behaviour and springback as relevant to the part |
| Surface requirements | Coating designation, exposed or unexposed surface needs, and oiling condition |
| Product form | Sheet, slit strip or coil subject to grade and dimension availability |
| Dimensions | Thickness, width and cut length to the agreed order |
| Tolerances | Specify thickness, flatness, width, length, camber and edge tolerances |
| Inspection | Mill test documentation and traceability requirements agreed before order |
| Order basis | Drawing revision, quantity, destination and required delivery schedule |
Attach the material specification and part drawing where available. Identify critical characteristics, approved substitutions, coil weight limits or bundle size restrictions. If samples or a trial batch are needed before series production, state the intended trial process and inspection scope. Availability, minimum order quantity and lead time are confirmed against the complete requirement.
Packaging should be agreed for the product form and shipping route. Sheet packs need suitable support, edge protection and secure restraint. Coil enquiries should specify the eye orientation, weight limit and handling equipment. Moisture protection and separation materials should be compatible with the supplied surface and downstream cleaning process. Confirm the packaging method in the order rather than assuming a single arrangement suits every shipment.
Check package condition and identification on arrival, and retain the link between the material, delivery documents and inspection certificate. Store steel under dry cover with support that prevents distortion. Allow cold material to reach workshop temperature before opening moisture-sensitive packaging where condensation is a concern. Handle with suitable lifting equipment and protect exposed edges and coated surfaces.
No. DP steel uses a multiphase microstructure, while HSLA is a separate high-strength steel family. Similar tensile strengths do not mean identical forming behaviour.
Edge preparation and local deformation both matter. Investigate cutting clearance, burrs, edge damage and the grade’s suitability for the stretch-flanging operation.
Include the full grade, standard, yield requirements, elongation test basis, dimensions and coating. Tensile strength alone is not a complete purchasing specification.
Send the complete grade and standard, dimensions, quantity, surface condition, destination and required delivery date. Add any test, traceability, packaging or customer approval requirements so they can be reviewed before the order is placed.
The images illustrate the product form. Grade identity and acceptance are established by the agreed specification and inspection documentation, not by visual appearance.
